Importer Exporter Code (IEC) Registration

Your Gateway to International Trade

Importer Exporter Code (IEC) Registration

International trade is a gateway to a world of opportunities for businesses in India. Whether you're looking to import goods, export products, or expand your business globally, having an Importer Exporter Code (IEC) is your key to entering the international market.

This Import and Export Code is issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), under the Ministry of Commerce. All importers and exporters in India must understand what the IEC Code is and why it's crucial.

For importers, the DGFT IEC and the import-export licence are indispensable for customs clearance and for facilitating payments to foreign banks, ensuring smooth international trade transactions.

Similarly, exporters rely on the IEC to streamline the process of sending shipments abroad and receiving payments from overseas clients.

LordVenus is here to simplify the entire process for you. Our comprehensive IEC registration services make it easier than ever to obtain the essential IEC certificate and import-export licence, ensuring that you're fully prepared to explore and grow in the global trade landscape.

What is IEC Code (Import Export Code)?

IEC Code Full Form: Importer Exporter Code

An Import and Export Code (IEC) is a mandatory requirement for any business entity that wants to import goods into India or export goods out of India. The IEC is commonly referred to as the IEC number, and it is a unique ten-digit code issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).

A valid DGFT IEC registration certificate is compulsory for any business involved in international trade. Therefore, before initiating any import/export of goods, it is important to ensure that the business entity holds both GST registration and an IEC number, as these are essential for clearing goods through customs.

If an importer does not have a valid IEC number or registration, the goods may get stuck at the port, incur demurrage charges, or even be destroyed — resulting in significant losses. Therefore, it is crucial to follow all key rules.

Importance of Import Export Code

Businesses have a great opportunity to expand into the international market through the export and import of products and services. The IEC (Importer Exporter Code) is an important requirement for entering the global market, as it facilitates the growth and development of businesses to a significant extent.

  • Access to International MarketsThe DGFT IEC Code is mandatory for businesses involved in import and export, enabling them to reach global markets with ease. The IEC smooths the entry of Indian companies into the international arena, unlocking doors for expansion and growth.
  • Easy Online RegistrationThe process of obtaining an Import Export Code is entirely online and hassle-free, requiring only minimal document submission. Businesses can apply conveniently without dealing with complex paperwork.
  • Minimal Document RequirementsApplying for an IEC does not require an extensive list of documents. The simplified process saves time and effort for businesses looking to start international operations.
  • Lifetime ValidityAn IEC comes with lifetime validity, meaning once it is issued, there is no need for renewal, filing, or frequent updates as long as the business exists and the code is not revoked or surrendered.
  • Prevents Illegal Goods MovementSince accurate and authentic information must be provided to obtain an IEC, the transportation of illegal goods becomes nearly impossible, promoting transparency in trade.
  • Avails Multiple Government BenefitsBusinesses with IEC registration can access various government schemes and benefits, including subsidies from Customs, Export Promotion Councils, or other authorities. With LUT filing under GST, exporters can export goods or services without paying IGST. If tax is paid on exports, the exporter can claim a refund of the tax amount.
  • No Ongoing Compliance RequirementUnlike many other registrations, IEC holders are not required to meet ongoing compliance obligations such as annual filings or periodic return submissions. This makes maintaining the IEC simple and stress-free.

Validity of DGFT IEC Code

As mentioned above, IEC Code registration is permanent and valid for a lifetime. This means there are no hassles with ongoing filing, nor renewing your import-export licence once it is issued. The IEC remains valid as long as the business exists unless the registration is revoked or surrendered.

Unlike other registrations such as GST or PF, an importer or exporter with an IEC does not need to file any annual returns or fulfill any ongoing compliance requirements. IEC registration is a one-time process with no additional compliance. It is highly recommended that all exporters and importers obtain their IEC immediately after business incorporation.
